Anticipatory Ethnography

A hybrid approach that combines Design Fiction with Ethnography to study possible futures by conducting ethnographic analysis of design fictions. Rather than observing only present-day contexts, researchers can examine fictional worlds, their creation processes, or audience responses to understand how people might live and interact with future technologies. This bridges Design Fiction's imaginative scope with ethnography's rigorous observational methods, creating actionable insights for design challenges that reach further into the future than traditional ethnography allows.
