What's "Morecambe Bay Timescapes"?

The 'Morecambe Bay Timescapes' engaged local secondary school students in visualising the potential impact of climate change on coastal areas. Through stereographic visualisations of local coastal pasts and futures, the project empowered local communities who are typically excluded from decision-making processes but will be one of the most affected by climate change.

Who's it for?

This work may be of interest to anyone interested in climate change, youth and public engagement. It might also be inspiring for policy makers looking for creative methods for future planning.

Approach

The project worked with local schools to co-create future visualisations. It utilised climate science classes, interactive workshops, and fieldwork activities. The final visualisations were displayed as site-specific installations.

Contribution

The visions produced by young people were used in future-making conversations with strategic decision-makers.

The final presentation incorporated hyperlocal data, such as predictive data, historical photos, and family memories, to provide a direct experience for participants.

Why is it in the Observatory?

The project illustrates the value of design research to bring future visions to life, having a significant contribution in decision-making processes.
